Organics Workshop
On Friday, February 22, we prepared for spring
with an inspiring seminar on Organics! Lori
Lively of Marlene’s Market told us how to
incorporate organic foods into our daily
regimen; Patty Wolfrom, St. Francis Hospital
accupuncturist, talked about techniques for
healthy habits and a healthy lifestyle; and our
own Mike Stanley, Master Gardener, discussed how
to get an early start on preparing our gardens! There
were also
many vendors on hand...and raffle prizes! It was
a wonderfully fun seminar as you can tell from
the photos below.

Photos, clockwise from top left: 1) Dr. Ed
Baumann, a guest of Marlene’s Markets, spoke
about eating for health; 2) Dr. Baumann; 3) Meet
our Volunteer of the Year, Jennifer Dovey (far

Camelot Elementary selected OSPI Green Ribbon
School of Excellence
The Office of Superintendent of Public
Instruction announced the nominees for OSPI
Green Ribbon Schools of Excellence on March 22,
and Camelot Elementary School was among
the winners. The award recognizes schools that
excel in the areas of environmental impact and
energy efficiency, healthy school environments,
and environmental and sustainability education.
Camelot houses one of the FWCG gardens, having
broken ground last year! You can read the story
in the
Federal Way Mirror.
Camelot teacher Darcy Borg has also been
selected as a King County Earth Hero at School.
She has worked closely with our Master Gardener,
Mike Stanley, to get gardening and horticultural
training for herself, and in turn has led
professional development workshops for staff.
Her fundraising, teaching, and organizational
efforts have been indispensable to the
development of the garden at Camelot.
The Earth Hero at School program celebrates King
County students, teachers, staff, and volunteers
who implement projects at their school or beyond
to protect our environment. We
are very proud of
Darcy...and of the great work underway at
Camelot.

Garden Highlights
Our gardens have
expanded and grown over the years. Take a look for
yourself. You'll agree it's been quite a ride!

●
Approximately 8000 volunteer hours were provided
to build and operate the gardens in 2011! We had
help from AmeriCorps, Truman High School
students, the Multi-Service Center job program,
Todd Beamer High School Environmental Club,
Federal Way disabled adults, Thomas Jefferson
High School special needs students, home school
students, an Eagle Scout and his team, Faith in
Action team and many, many community volunteers!
●
The Truman Garden harvested and delivered about
4000 pounds of produce, while the Senior Center
Garden delivered about 6000 pounds of produce.
●
We saw the development of four new gardens at
Camelot, Enterprise, Green Gables, and Nautilus
Elementary Schools; ground was broken on the
Light of Christ Lutheran Church Garden; and the
design was started on the Olympic View
Elementary School Garden. In addition, we
committed to development of new garden at the
new school "bus barn" location and signed and
agreement with Federal Way schools for the
operation of our school gardens.
●
Produce was delivered to the senior housing
apartments, meals-on-wheels clients, the three
dinners for the homeless provided by local
churches each week, senior center lunch program
and food pantry, and to local soup kitchens and
the food bank.
●
We finished our application for our 501c3
nonprofit status.
●
We upgraded our website.
●
The Senior Center Garden as part of the Federal
Way Symphony Garden Tour.
●
We had a successful “Iron Chef” fund raiser
event at the Senior Center garden and our
Magical Night of Giving event at the SuperMall
was also successful.
●
Our Master Gardener, Michael Stanley, received
the
“Service Above Self” Award from the Noon
Rotary Club of Federal Way.
